School Guitar Buying Guide

Beginner

Beginner

A classical guitar with nylon strings is generally a good choice for younger children and beginners as the nylon strings will be gentler on the fingers than the steel strings of an acoustic or electric guitar. Selecting an instrument that is the correct size, making it comfortable to play, will also influence a beginners enthusiasm for learning. Players who are 100-125cm tall should consider a 1/2 size guitar while players who are 125-165cm should consider a 3/4 size guitar.

Intermediate

Intermediate

Intermediate players will have tougher fingers and may prefer the louder, brighter sound of an acoustic guitar with steel strings or even an electric guitar with amplifier. Acoustic guitars are light weight but can be bulky. They are best suited to playing folk, pop, country and slow rock music. Electric guitars tend to be smaller than classical or acoustic guitars so they can be a good choice for most ages and heights. However, keep in mind electric guitars can be heavy depending on the model. These instruments are good for anyone who wishes to play rock, metal, pop and country music.
